The Process:

Medical History

The doctors will ask some of these questions and more:

  • Serious illnesses among other family members
  • Illnesses that you had when you were younger or may have now, such as asthma, diabetes, or epilepsy
  • Previous hospitalizations or surgeries
  • Allergies
  • Past injuries
  • Any medications that you are on
  • Does the athlete have asthma (wheezing), hay fever, or coughing spells after exercise?
  • Has the athlete ever stopped exercising because of dizziness or passed out during exercise?
  • Has the athlete ever suffered a heat-related illness (heat stroke)?

Physical Exam

During the physical part of the exam, the doctor will usually:

  • Record your height and weight
  • Take a blood pressure and pulse (heart rate and rhythm) reading
  • Test your vision
  • Check your heart, lungs, abdomen, ears, nose, and throat
  • Evaluate your posture, joints, strength, and flexibility

Physical Exams: Frequently Asked Questions

A physical exam typically includes a review of your medical history, vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, etc.), a physical check (eyes, heart, lungs, abdomen), and possibly lab tests.

Yes, there are general wellness exams (annual physicals), employment-related physicals, DOT / driver physicals, and specialized physicals (e.g., sports or school exams).

Avoid heavy exercise, large meals, or caffeine just before your check-up. Also, bring a list of your medications, supplements, and any relevant medical records.

A standard physical can take 20–45 minutes, depending on whether lab tests or screenings are needed.

The four key parts are: Inspection (visual check), Palpation (feeling the body), Percussion (tapping to assess underlying structures), and Auscultation (listening with a stethoscope).

Not usually. Routine physical exams may be covered, but "full-body scans" or advanced imaging are often seen as optional or non-preventive and may not be covered.

Here are some useful questions:

  • Which screenings or lab tests do I need now?
  • What do my health numbers (BP, cholesterol, etc.) mean?
  • Do I need any immunizations?
  • Based on my family history, what conditions should I monitor?
  • What are the best lifestyle changes I can make for my health?

Why it's important

The exam helps determine whether it's safe for you to participate in a particular activity. Most states require adolescent athletes to have a sports physical before they can start a new sport or begin a new competitive season.
